Abu Dhabi GP
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix forms Round 18 of the 2012 FIA Formula 1 World Championship and is currently held at the Yas Marina Circuit.
Announced in early 2007, the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was initially scheduled to be held as the 19th and final race of the season when the FIA revealed the provisional 2009 Formula 1 calendar. As the year progressed and various events found themselves cut from the schedule, the Yas Marina Circuit eventually hosted the race two weeks before the initially planned date but remained as the final fixture of the year.
One of the many Hermann Tilke designed tracks in the Formula 1 portfolio, the circuit itself is located on Yas Island; a 25.5 km² island on the east coast of Abu Dhabi. The 5.554km layout features nine right-hand turns, eleven left hand turns and is one of the only tracks to run anti-clockwise as it winds through the impressive Yas Marina bay.
The inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was the first ever day-night Formula 1 race, starting at 17:00 local time. Thousands of floodlights were used to illuminate the circuit from the very start of the race to ensure a seamless transition from daylight to darkness; a spectacle which has proved popular enough to ensure the same format in subsequent seasons.
