The first United States Grand Prix to officially form part of the Formula 1 calendar took place at Sebring in 1959. Since that inaugural race, the event has been held at a range of different venues during a history which has included various hiatuses from the schedule.

After just a single year, the race was moved to the Riverside circuit before upping sticks once again twelve months later to begin a twenty year residency at Watkins Glen between 1961-1980. After an eight year break, the event returned to the schedule in 1988; this time hosted at the Phoenix circuit for three seasons before disappearing from the line-up once more.

The year 2000 signalled the beginning of another relatively brief period of stateside Formula 1 action; the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway becoming the latest home of the event over an eight year stretch. Following the 2007 season however, another spell in the wilderness left a void in the American motorsport calendar.

In 2012, the United States Grand Prix made it’s long awaited return to the line-up at the first ever purpose built Formula 1 facility to be conceived across the pond; the brand new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Conceptualised by renowned circuit designer Hermann Tilke in collaboration with American architectural experts HKS, the 5.516km anti-clockwise layout features twenty corners; each of which draws inspiration from historic tracks across the globe.

The circuit proved an instant hit amongst teams, drivers and fans alike; with its varied layout providing excellent wheel-to-wheel racing and the vast crowd creating a superb atmosphere. After years spent on the sidelines, America has undoubtedly placed itself firmly back on the Formula 1 map.
