Romain, P4 today and more points on the board; what are your thoughts on the race?
It’s always good to score good points, but for sure we were expecting more from today. The cooler temperatures didn’t help us and the start was not as good as I wanted so we’ll need to analyse both of those factors before the next race. The positives of course are that we’ve achieved two more top five finishes and the car was very strong in the last part of the race so we’ll try to take that forward to Monaco.
We’ve heard that you had some contact in the first few corners; did this affect the car in any way?
There was some very slight contact which damaged my front wing end plate. This unfortunately caused a few issues with the front tyres in the early part of the race, but we made some adjustments to the front wing settings during one of the stops and this seemed to cancel it out nicely. The team did a great job to work around the issue – once they made that change the car was absolutely flying!
Do you think the switch to soft tyres perhaps came a bit too early?
To be honest I think we got the strategy call pretty much right; it was more the drop in track temperature that caught us out, particularly after missing out on what could have been some useful comparable data from Free Practice 3. Given the way the day played out I think we can be relatively pleased with the result. It’s good to be a bit disappointed with P3 and P4, as it shows how much belief there is within the team that we can win; if you offered me these last two results last year I’d have signed up straight away!
Monaco is up next in two weeks’ time; you must be excited to race there?
Monaco will be very special as always. The atmosphere there is incredible and we’re more or less in France which is obviously great for me! It’s as close to a home Grand Prix as us French drivers will get this year, so being on the parade lap and seeing a few flags lining the streets will be a huge motivation for all three of us. I can’t wait!
